It’s funny how technology changes and the ideas with it. Only a few years ago, web designers were falling over themselves to come up with the coolest Flash site that money could buy. If you didn’t leave a site without blood trickling from your corneas, then the designer didn’t do their job.
Nowadays, those same web designers are standing on top of soapboxes in the streets, decrying the abomination that is Flash. “Prepare ye the way for HTML5″, they say. At the same time, throwing pop cans at the kid trying to play Flash games on his Android phone.
Flash used to be a solution to a problem; today, it feels like a band-aid that we as designers are too afraid to pull off. With the right tools, HTML5 lets you watch video, listen to music, create documents, interact with complete strangers, and even play games; all without the need for any extra plugins. It’s what a web browser strived to be fifteen/twenty years ago.
Well I am proud to announce that I am one of those self-righteous indignants who has grabbed his own box (double cardboard lined for safety and comfort) and has begun to collect pop cans for projectile use. GrahamJelinski.com is now certified HTML5 valid by the W3C; if you don’t believe me, click this link.
Standards are important, and I want to make sure my site follows them as best it can. It ensures that all most web browsers will render the pages properly and create a consistent experience for all most users.
