Genuine Sparkling HTML5

It’s funny how technology changes and the ideas with it. Only a few years ago, web designers were falling over themselves to come up with the coolest Flash site that money could buy. If you didn’t leave a site without blood trickling from your corneas, then the designer didn’t do their job.

Nowadays, those same web designers are standing on top of soapboxes in the streets, decrying the abomination that is Flash. “Prepare ye the way for HTML5″, they say. At the same time, throwing pop cans at the kid trying to play Flash games on his Android phone.

Flash used to be a solution to a problem; today, it feels like a band-aid that we as designers are too afraid to pull off. With the right tools, HTML5 lets you watch video, listen to music, create documents, interact with complete strangers, and even play games; all without the need for any extra plugins. It’s what a web browser strived to be fifteen/twenty years ago.

Well I am proud to announce that I am one of those self-righteous indignants who has grabbed his own box (double cardboard lined for safety and comfort) and has begun to collect pop cans for projectile use. GrahamJelinski.com is now certified HTML5 valid by the W3C; if you don’t believe me, click this link.

Standards are important, and I want to make sure my site follows them as best it can. It ensures that all most web browsers will render the pages properly and create a consistent experience for all most users.

Objective C, It’s All Greek to.. err Chinese… I Don’t Know What It Is

Notice: Undefined variable: style in /var/www/grahamjelinski.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/tweet-this/tweet-this.php on line 1041

I came to a conclusion this year. I am going to become one of the many hundreds of thousands of developers to write an iPhone app and make a ton of cash doing it. Or at least, pay off the 99 bucks Apple makes you pay to even post your app. One problem though: I don’t know Objective C – not a lick of it.

I’m a C# guy, I like it when big poppa Microsoft holds my hand and gently pats my head when I write gawd-awful code. C# is an easy language to learn and it’s very flexible. So naturally, I thought Apple’s native language would be a natural transition from C# to Objective C. Both object oriented, both very popular, both contain the letter “C”.

Right…

If sweet poppa Gates held your hand whilst writing C#, Major General Jobs will smack your behind while writing Objective C. It’s not the same, it doesn’t look the same, and – worst of all – no garbage collection (whimper, sob). Everything I learned about C# has to be completely erased, putting me right back at square one.

I’ll tell you more about it over the coming weeks, months, years, decades; however long it takes for me to figure it out. For now though, I’m gonna try making a call… wait no, send a message… I don’t know. Oooh look, Angry Birds for Mac!

New Website Is Now Live

Notice: Undefined variable: style in /var/www/grahamjelinski.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/tweet-this/tweet-this.php on line 1041

I am very excited to announce the launch of the new GrahamJelinski.com. I’ve put a lot of planning and hard work into this version and I think the end result shows that. This version really focused on refining the details and making sure content was visible and easy to find. The previous version focused a litte too much on the glitz and special effects. This time around, things have been dumbed down a bit to make navigation more predictable.

This version also features a lot more social integration. For the very first time, I have launched a blog. Here, I will provide links to articles, designs, tips, and whatever random musings come to mind. I’ve also provided links to Facebook, Twitter, and other social network sites so you can help me share this site with others.

Well, I think I’ve said enough. Explore the site, take a look at some of my work, and if you like what you see, send me a comment.

The Wonderful World of Blogging

Notice: Undefined variable: style in /var/www/grahamjelinski.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/tweet-this/tweet-this.php on line 1041

Well I might only be 10, 15 years behind the rest of the cyberworld, but I’ve finally done it; I’ve joined the world as a blogger. Part of me resisted doing this because I always thought there are so many other people with so many better thoughts and ideas than me, and I really wasn’t interested in telling people what I ate at 3:00 pm this afternoon.

You, the reader, deserved better.

Well peer pressure is a fickle mistress. She likes to tell you that you have to do it because everyone else is doing it. You know that you really don’t have to but the other part of you knows that you do. When I look at what I’m doing now, I’m kind of excited that I’ve got an outlet to tell the world of all my great adventures, ideas, and inspirations. Still, there’s the other part of me that weeps inside because I sold my soul for want of a blog.

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “why in God’s earth should I read your blog?” The answer is, “I’m not sure”. This is going to be an outlet for me to share ideas and stories that inspired me, tell you about websites that really tickled my creative side, and the occasional youtube video that the world just has to know about. Other than that, there really isn’t much else.

You can come back to my site from time to time and see if there’s something new to read. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it and hopefully something I write inspires change somewhere, somehow. Thanks for checking in and I’ll see you on the other side.

Peace…
